  • Philosophy in selection of surgical approaches
  • Basic surgical technique
  • Tissue management
  • Fracture healing
  • Tendon healing

10:00 - 11:30: Wrist and hand

  • Demonstration of approaches, indications, video demo
  • Dorsal approach to the distal radius and radio-carpal joint
  • Dorsal approach to the distal ulna and TFCC
  • Volar approach to the distal radius/median nerve
  • Volar approach to the distal ulna/ulnar nerve
  • Approach to the metacarpals
  • Approach to the MCP and PIP joints

11:30 - 12:30: Lunch

12:30 - 14:15: Wrist and hand practical exercises

14:15 - 16:00: Elbow and forearm

  • Demonstration of approaches, indications, video demo
  • Posterior approach to the elbow
  • Medial approach to the elbow/ulnar nerve
  • Lateral approach to the elbow
  • Anterior approaches to the elbow/radial and median nerves
  • Volar approach to the forearm (Henry)
  • Dorsal approaches to the forearm
    (Boyd, Thompson)
  • Reinsertion of distal biceps tendon
  • Suture of lateral collateral ligament

16:00 - 18:15: Elbow and forearm practical exercises

18:15: Closure

Friday September 17

8:00 - 9:00: Upper arm
Demonstration of basic approaches, indications, video demo

Anterolateral approach

  • Radial nerve
  • Posterior approaches
  • Medial approach

9:00 - 10:30: Upper arm practical exercises

10:30 - 12:15: Shoulder and upper arm

Demonstration of basic approaches, indications, video demo

  • Deltopectoral approach
  • Superior approach to the shoulder
  • Posterior approach to the shoulder
  • Ac-joint and clavicle
  • Identification of axillary, suprascapular and musculocutaneous nerves
  • Suture of subscapularis tendon
  • Open Bankart repair and capsular shift

12:15 - 13:15: Lunch

12:15 - 14:15: Shoulder practical exercises

14:15 - 15:15: Compartment syndrome

  • Management of soft tissue defects
  • Local flaps

15:15: Closure
